Top 3 Summer Activities

Summer is coming up quickly and that means bar-b-ques, festivals, and getting outside! It also means summer vacations to enjoy some well-deserved time away and there’s plenty to do in Galena. Enjoying the unique geography and landscapes that the area provides is one of our favorite things to do regardless of the season, and with so many options, we’ve listed a few of our ‘Tops’ to get you started.

Amazing Hikes

There are lots of places to enjoy a hike in Galena and Jo Daviess County, with the closest being the Galena River Trail just a short walk from Aldrich Guest House.

Various trails in the area range in levels of difficulty from beginner to intermediate and distances range from just a short walk to full-day trips. For pre-planned hikes that we have made for you, take a look at our Itineraries Page!

Biking The Trails

Whether you are ready to attack the hills that Galena has to offer or you’re looking for a casual flat land ride, we’ve got it here. Bring your own bike or rent them from Fever River Outfitters.  Check out the Galena River Trail for an easy ride and if you’re feeling strong, you can take it all the way to Chestnut Mountain, ride the chairlift up to the lodge, and have a beer before you ride back (approximately 18 miles round trip).

If a more challenging ride is the goal and you’re ready to tackle the hills, explore Blackjack Road or Pilot Knob Road to River Road but be cautious as these are extremely hilly and curvy!

River Sports

The Galena River isn’t just for crossing over to get to Main Street! While it’s no longer the 400 foot wide waterway that it once was, there is still lots to do on the river.

The best place to start your river adventure is Nuts Outdoors where you can rent canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards. Trips range from 2 hours to full-day excursions. And of course, after your day of outdoor fun, our evening Happy Hour is a great way to relax and recharge before you head back out for some of the great restaurants that Galena has to offer!
